On May 24, 2026, one of the war's largest attacks on Kyiv (some 600 drones and 90 missiles) damaged the National Art Museum of Ukraine, a protected landmark, and largely destroyed the National Chornobyl Museum. The art museum's staff and collection were unharmed, but it closed indefinitely. In August a strike set fire to the Kherson Regional Art Museum, looted by Russian troops during the 2022 occupation. Four years in, UNESCO had verified damage to 563 cultural sites, including 43 museums, and Ukrainian officials estimated 1.7 million cultural objects looted. The strikes moved the war's toll on art from occupied towns to the capital's national collections.
