US Withdraws from UNESCO (Third Time)
Announced June 22, 2025 and effective December 31, 2026, the US leaves UNESCO for the third time — following earlier withdrawals in 1984 and 2018. As the body's largest potential funder and the administrator of World Heritage Sites, the Intangible Cultural Heritage list, and global press freedom programs, the exit leaves UNESCO operating with a structural deficit during the notice period and the legal protection of thousands of designated cultural sites weakened. The withdrawal coincides with active destruction of heritage sites across multiple conflict zones, intensifying the gap between international cultural law and enforcement.
