Justinian's cathedral created an entirely new spatial experience (a vast dome floating on a band of light) that redefined sacred architecture and its mosaic programs. The building's later conversion to a mosque and then a museum traces the whole arc of Byzantine and Islamic visual culture's encounter with the modern world.
